Welded Stainless Steel Tube

Welded stainless steel tube requires that alloys be melted according to certain specifications, depending on the grade and the application. The basic strip of stainless steel, from which the tubes are to be formed, is either a hot or cold formed coil. Depending on whether the tubing is hot or cold formed, the results will be different. Tubing made from cold formed stainless steel will have a smooth finish and strong mechanical traits, as well as closer tolerances than hot formed coil-based tubing. Welded pipe is manufactured by rolling metal sheet and then welding it longitudinally across its length. The welded pipe manufacturing process begins with the rolling of a steel coil to the desired gauge thickness to form a fl at strip. The fl at strip is cut to the width that corresponds with the size of the pipe to be produced. The pipe is formed by moving the cut coil through a series of rollers, and the seam of the tube is then welded in a chemically neutral environment. In a welded pipe, the seam or the weld-joint is the weaker part of the pipe limiting the strength of the pipe to the strength of the weld-joint.

Regardless of whether the stainless steel is hot or cold rolled coil, the welding process is the same. First, the coils are separated into designated widths. Next, forming processes are applied. In order to seal the seams of each formed tube, welding rolls are used. (Rolls are also used to prevent tearing during welding). Once the weld is complete, weld bead conditioning can begin. For thin-wall tubes, this entails weld forgiving. For thicker wall tubes, weld roll-down is typically applied.

After this step is complete, the tubes are then sized, which ensures that the tube meets the proper designated dimensions including diameter, roundness, and straightness. To establish the final length of the tubing, the tube must be cut (this step is often called cutoff ). Cutoff can be achieved in several ways, but abrasive cutting is a common choice because it does not require a size change with each tube as a die does. Shear cutting is also a common choice because it protects the tube’s integrity during cutoff , ensuring the part doesn’t become warped or misshapen.
